Think of it as a cross between the open world style of Grand Theft Auto - right down to pick any vehicle you want option - and the dark, dramatic turns of The Walking Dead video game series.
It was this aspect that finally won me over to State of Decay. You can follow the story, or take numerous detours to explore the area and try to survive. The important point is that State of Decay is essentially an open world game. Aside from travelling on foot, you have the option of driving a vehicle and when I took Torres exploring discovered a barricaded military base, which I plan to return to. Campbell and Jones eventually flee the ranger's station and hold up in a church in a nearby township. It goes into the nitty-gritty of survival, from weapons, food and shelter, to creating emotional bonds with other survivors and boosting morale Often smashing a tomahawk into a zombie's skull is easier than striking up a conversation with survivors, so to really master State of Decay, what's really scary is you have to make friends. While many zombie games focus on the killing or fleeing the creatures, State of Decay places as much emphasis on surviving and working with other survivors. I then switched to the feisty soldier Maya Torres and had her search surrounding townships for medical supplies to help some injured survivors. In my instance it was literally to give Campbell a rest, as either attaching or fleeing zombies can lower energy reserves. A few sessions into the game you can switch to other characters. Before you can say "brains, I must have brains!" They discover most of the park's population walk slowly, mumble and growl, and are strict carnivores. The game opens with Marcus Campbell, described in his character summary as "an athlete and born leader" and his friend Ed Jones returning from a fishing trip in an American national park. The scenario of being another zombie apocalypse survival saga meant that while I was curious, I wasn't excited.
State of Decay was first released for the Box 360 console two years ago, but has been re-mastered for Xbox One. How many more permutations do we need before it feels as ubiquitous and mind-numbing as, well, vampire franchises? Sick of zombies yet?
